Miacademy

I’ll be honest, I don’t think Miacademy is the end all be all. It certainly doesn’t make everything hands off for me. I still have to stay close to my kids while they are working. Both of my kids are 8 years old and are able to navigate the site by themselves. They can login and get to lessons easily. I stay close, especially to my son, to make sure he stays on task and actually tries and doesn’t just guess on the questions. I have found that Miacademy lacks in spelling and writing. I do supplement in those areas. I also do comprehension checks for each lesson and subject to make sure they are understanding.

I do like that Miacademy has electives that include Bible study. We are about to start Survivor’s Quest, which my kids are super excited about.

The parental controls are very easy to use. I can change days and dates at any time. I can check grades, assign, reassign, or unassign a lesson at any time as well. One thing that worked well for us was that I could assign subjects by level. So, for math, we started at 3rd grade level, but for reading, we started at 2nd.

Students are able to work at their own pace and can work ahead if they want to.  Since we started my daughter has completed 2nd and 3rd grade reading and started 4th grade reading in just 10 months. We did work lightly during the summer with a couple weeks off for vacation and then holiday breaks for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I know someone people like a more traditional approach to academics when it comes to homeschooling, but this is what is working for us.
