Where to Start?

I knew nothing about homeschool. I didn’t really even know the philosophy behind homeschool. My whole teaching career I had actually been against homeschool. Thinking that it was best to keep kids in school with their peers and teachers who love them and a system that knew what was best. I was so naive. Alas, here I was trying to figure out how this works. I Googled and read articles, and was completely overwhelmed. There is so much out there. The one thing that did make sense to me coming from a special education background is that nothing was a one size fits all and what works for one family or child may not work for another. Also, what works today may not work tomorrow.

One of the best things I did at the beginning was join a whole bunch of homeschool groups and homeschool mom groups on Facebook. Yes, some were better than others and some I left because they were ridiculous. I made sure to join every local group so that I knew the resources in the community available to us. These local moms have become my community. These are our new playdate group members. These are the people we meet at parks, museums, splash pads, and libraries. They also go through the same things you do and have some great ideas to share. They have all started somewhere and are the best support group to have.

My first piece of advice is to join all the local Facebook groups and even state homeschool groups, and stalk the groups until you feel like you have a little bit of an understanding of what is what. 🙂
